Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection Review

Excellent boxed set comprised of slim cases with the six original cast movies.

If you haven’t watched them in over twenty years, you may be in for a bit of a let down on the first one.

Star Trek the SLOW Motion Picture. It was the one that revived the franchise, but it is VERY painful to watch. Have your remote control handy because you will definitely be fast-forwarding through a lot of it.
The special effects were state-of-the-art and they wanted to show them off — for minutes at a time.
Watching the actors stare at you with strange looks on their faces, for what seems like an eternity, is commonplace.

If you can fast forward through the endless periods of no sound, the five-minute shuttle ride to and then around the newly washed and waxed Enterprise, and then the 30 minutes of flying into VGER (reminiscent of the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey), it’s not so bad.

The Wrath of Khan is a breath of fresh air after the first movie. Ricardo Montalban reprises his role from the Original Series episode: Space Seed. (Where was Chekov in that episode where Khan would have remembered him from?)
Some footage from the first movie was recycled for this one. The extra features explain that they had to do it because of the studio executives insistance on cost-cutting. I had not noticed it before.

The second, third and fourth movies are actually a “trilogy”. The extras on the disks give interviews about that revelation (to me), and are very informative.

The fifth and sixth movies are not as fun as the fourth movie: The Voyage Home, but they are sure better than the first one.

The interviews and extras are worth the price of the boxed set alone.

The other “extra” that is on each disk is a cleverly simulated Starfleet Academy lecture where
an instructor explains the movie in the past tense as a history lesson.

Overall, this is a great collection that can be enjoyed over a three-day weekend.

Dead Until Dark (Original MM Art) (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood) Review

This is the first in a series of books about Sookie Stackhouse, a waitress in a bar who can hear people’s thoughts. This novel introduces us to characters and context that set the stage for other works in this series (this is the only work on Stackhouse that I have read). We learn of vampires integrating themselves (sort of) into human society. We learn of shapeshifters living among the characters.

Sookie’s social life is compromised by her hearing the thoughts of those around her. Dates with men collapse as she can hear them wondering about her body, about what might happen that evening, and so on. The personal part of this story is about her coming to feel passion toward another–a vampire, Jim. She cannot easily read a vampire’s thoughts (although we learn later that she can pick up some thoughts from them), and a relationship with a vampire has this positive element to it.

This is also the story of murder. An awful lot of people die in this work. The Rats try to kill Sookie. Big mistake. Apparently an enraged vampire can do amazing things! People whom Sookie knows die. Who did it? Townspeople fear that vampires did it and seek revenge.

Part of the story, too, is about Sookie coming to be comfortable with her power to know what others are thinking. In some ways, this is a book about self-discovery for her, just as it is something of a mystery (which doesn’t work so well; we really don’t get the kind of clues that lead us to develop hypotheses about who the villain might be).

Thus, this is a pretty good introductory volume in a series that develops (and this series has been the basis for a cable TV series). Will I read more? It’s tempting! And that probably says something about the quality of this work.

Dead Until Dark (Original MM Art) (Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood) Overview

Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out….

Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn’t such a bright idea.

A fun, fast, funny, and wonderfully intriguing blend of vampire and mystery that’s hard to put down, and should not be missed. (Susan Sizemore)

Praise for Charlaine Harris:

Harris writes neatly and with assurance. (New York Times Book Review)

An author of rare talents. (Publishers Weekly)

Ray Ban RB3025 Aviator Sunglasses – The Original Large Metal Aviator Review

I went with the 55mm polarized black Ray Bans. I have to say that the frames are smaller than I expected; I am a small person with a pretty small head (I tighten my Sony headphones all the way up, for instance) and they almost didn’t fit. Somebody like Wayne Knight, would trash them for sure. No offense to Mr. Knight.

The style is classic, and the Ray Ban logo on the corner of your shades demonstrates a cucumberesque level of cool. Durability is top notch considering how thin they are. They will last until they inevitably get broken, lost, or stolen. These rarely left my head on a Florida trip this August, and they were very welcome on the drive and on the snowblinding sands of Destin. However after wearing them in the ocean they developed weird splotches on the inside of the lenses (invisible from the outside, and to the wearer when you’re actually wearing the glasses), probably some polarization-related coating affected by the saltwater because I haven’t managed to polish it off. No ill effects besides that, they didn’t rust or anything and are still great for every day wear. but seriously, get some cheap shades if you’re actually going to swim in the ocean.

Pretty awesome shades, but if I had to do it all over again I would probably get several pairs of cheaper aviators in different colors and not be so worried whenever someone gets within 5 feet of sitting on them.
